The Union County Library, one of four libraries of the Mountain Regional Library System, is located in Blairsville. The 3-county system reported total circulation of 555,344, or 12.10 books per capita. The System budget in 2002 was $686,927, a per capita expenditure of $14.96. The hospital offers a wide range of services rarely available in small communities. Union General Hospital is a full-service, community hospital operated by the Union County Hospital Authority, who also own and operate the Union County Nursing Home and Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee (15 miles northeast).
Union General Hospital has under construction a 88,000 sq. ft. addition, more than doubling the size from the current 72,000 sq. ft. A three-story building will be built in front of the current building, then the two will be joined together, after remodeling of the existing structure. The estimated construction cost is $20-million. But the total project will top $30-million, including new equipment and furnishings.

The Outpatient Department (Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m.) accommodates all outpatient procedures, including endoscopy and chemotherapy treatments.
Opening in 2000 was a chronic dialysis clinic to provide dialysis and other nephrology needs in the area, followed by the Cancer Treatment Center in 2002 to provide radiation therapy and medical oncology for the area.
Emergency Services operates 24-7-365, and includes 4 emergency rooms, staffed by physicians, physicians assistants, nurses, paramedics, and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's). The Hospital-based Ambulance Service makes about 2,600 calls per year with 5 ambulances. A heliport pad is used for airlifting critical patients to hospitals in Atlanta or Chattanooga.
During 2002, the Occupancy Rate was 41.5% with an average stay of 3.7 days. There were 9,942 Emergency Room visits. Union General Hospital is the clinical site for the Licensed Practical Nurse Program of North Georgia Technical College.
Union General Hospital purchased the 42-bed acute care Chatuge Regional Hospital and 112-bed Nursing Home in Towns County in 1999 to assure quality health care throughout the Greater Blairsville area.

The Union County Health Department's Health Center is located at 55 Hughes Street. This Center has many clinics to protect our community from health risks, to promote healthy behaviors and lifestyle and to prevent disease and disabilities. Prevention is the backbone of public health and the scope of service at this Center has a broad range.

The Union County Recreation Department provides recreation and leisure activities for citizens of all ages. There are 15 full-time employees and up to 20 part-time employees, depending on the season and the sports activity.

Meeks Park |
The Union County Recreation Department maintains and operates Meeks Park, including walking trails, lighted Girls and Adult softball and Little League baseball fields, utility fields, bleachers, concession stands, rest rooms, batting cage, playground equipment and picnic facilities. Butternut Creek winds through the park adding its beauty to the park setting.

Little League Baseball games and Girls and Adult Softball games are played at Meeks Park. The youth football games are played at the High School field.

An Olympic-size swimming pool, bath house and concession stand opened in 2000 at Meeks Park and operates from Memorial Day until Labor Day. Indoor heated pools are available at Young Harris College, at the Holiday Inn Express and at Blue Ridge Mountain Fitness Center.

There are 4 county parks within Union County. There are 4 tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course with pro shop, and picnic tables at Butternut Creek Recreation Center. At Meeks Park are 5 ball fields, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, snack bars, batting cages, picnic areas, pavilions and walking trails. Poteete Creek Park is a 100-acre tract on Lake Nottely, with swimming area, camp sites, boat launch, picnic tables, and a picnic pavilion. Canal Park has similar facilities also on Lake Nottely.
Numerous vistas are available in the area. The Chattahoochee National Forest covers over 51% of Union County. Waterfalls offer beautiful scenery for hikers throughout the area.
Vogel State Park, Georgia's original state park built in 1927, is only 10 miles south of Blairsville just off US 19/129 in the middle of the Chattahoochee National Forest at the base of Blood Mountain. With an elevation of 2,280 feet, its facilities are built around Lake Trahlyta for swimming, paddle boating and fishing. In 2001 over 250,000 people visited from 44 states and from every continent. Vogel State Park employs 17 full-time with an annual payroll of $514,000. With revenues of $1.2-million, Vogel Park is the only traditional park in the State system that realizes a profit.
Camping Life Magazine in 2000 listed Vogel State Park in the top 25 USA public campgrounds. Included in this exclusive listing were: Yellowstone, Mt. Zion National Park and other state parks around the country. Being a family-oriented park, families for several generations have been visiting Vogel together. There are many Union County full-time and part-time residents who purchased property and moved here after visiting Vogel State Park for several years.

The Nottely River flows below Vogel State Park and offers a spectacular view of nature during all seasons. Mountain trout fishing is a treat from this stream. There are 60 miles of designated trout streams within Union County.

Helton Creek Falls, 12 miles south of Blairsville, east of US 19/129.
The Appalachian Trail runs from Georgia to Maine across Union County with Walasi-Yi Center, a major stop for hikers located 4 miles south of Vogel State Park at Neel's Gap and U.S. 19/129 near the top of Blood Mountain, Georgia's second highest peak.

Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest mountain at 4,784 feet above sea level, is 20 miles southeast (by road) of Blairsville and offers: a panoramic view of 4 states, exhibits, video presentations, picnic tables, snack foods, and a log cabin bookstore. A one-half mile walking trail from the parking lot located in Union County takes you to the mountain peak and the Museum located within Towns County. River rafting is available on the Nottely River which flows from south to north through Blairsville into Lake Nottely. Within a three-quarter hour drive is the Ocoee River Gorge, where its raging waters hosted the kayak event for the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Misty Mountain Railroad is a private O-gauge model train collection and display, owned and operated by Charles Griffin. The track layout is famous and has been written about in many publications. Mr. Griffin shows the trains by appointment. You may call him at 706-745-9819.

Appalachian Bowling Center has 24 modern lanes with automatic equipment, shoe rental, and a snack bar. It is adjacent to the Bald Mountain Triple Cinema on GA 515 East.
Owned and operated by the Union County Recreation Department, Butternut Creek Golf Course sits in downtown Blairsville below beautiful Ivy Log Mountain. Butternut Creek plays to a modest 6,500+ yards, but 4 to 6 tee boxes on every hole give challenging options for every player. Water comes into play on 13 holes. Mounds, undulating greens and elevation changes are found throughout the course. It boasts Penncross Bent Grass greens and Tifton 419 Bermuda fairways and tees. The roughs and mounds have common Bermuda and love grass. While there is no driving range there is a stocked pro shop. A practice putting green is available. Architect for the course was Bill Watts, designer of Innsbruck and Sky Valley golf courses. Located just 11 miles east of Blairsville at Young Harris, Brasstown Valley Resort is a 503-acre, 134-room resort and conference center with an 18-hole links style championship 7,000-yard golf course that is the area's best.
There are tennis courts, a fitness center with professional exercise equipment, indoor/outdoor heated swimming pool, steam rooms, saunas, hiking trails, and stream fishing. Over 16,000 square feet is available for conferences, meetings and banquets. A fine dining room on the main level seats 160. A Golf Grill provides a more casual type of restaurant on the clubhouse level. Several bars are featured. Located off U.S. 64 at Lake Chatuge near Hayesville, NC, Mountain Harbour offers 6,800 yards of spectacular views and championship golf. Golf course architect was Willard Byrd, who also designed the Atlanta Country Club, Country Club of North Carolina, Hilton Head's Planter's Row and Wexford Plantation and Florida's Breakers West, The Oaks, and Harbourside.
