CONSTRUCTION

Current construction costs for new single-family dwellings are $80 to $150 per square foot plus cost of land. Census of Housing Data in 2000 showed 400 new homes constructed. Homes averaged 1, 944 square feet. and $58 per square foot making the average home cost about $111,100 in 2000.

UNION COUNTY FARM INCOME - 2001

Farm products provide $34.395-million to the Union County economy. The largest is day-old baby chicks from two primary hatcheries, Aviagen, Inc. and Cobb-Vantress, Inc. at $15.821-million.    Forestry provides $93,000. Speedling, Inc. has a 348,500 square foot greenhouse producing seedling flowers and hanging baskets with sales of $11.426-million. Other farm products include: $1.248-million of vegetables (sweet corn, collards, bell peppers, cabbage, snap beans, tomatoes, pumpkin; corn, tobacco, soybeans, sweet sorghum syrup, honey, ginseng. Beef, dairy, trout, koi, and sheep generate farm sales of $4.473-million. Fruits and nuts (apples, blueberries, strawberries) total $348,000.

The average size of a farm in Union County is 87 acres, while the median farm is 45 acres.  There were 256 farms with farmer's average age of 55, with 43.4% working off the farm 200 days or more per year.
